If we’re honest with ourselves, most of us can admit that no one really sets out with any other intention, than to make love last. After all, when they are attached to someone the more that we’d like to spend as much time as possible with them. Yet, many people who are hoping to find love, find themselves breaking up at some point after an initially intense connection with someone.
We can find ourselves wondering what we did wrong and what we can do to get it right. Why is it that some relationships last and others don’t and what is the key to making love last? In fact it may be easier than you think. Whether you’re already in a relationship, or you’d like to see yourself in one day, here are some of the keys to making it last the test of time.
Communicate
The foundation of any relationship, whether it’s platonic or romantic, is communicating with the other partner. Communication is an essential part of maintaining a good relationship and keeping the love alive. Whether it’s communicating about your wants and needs, or communicating when tackling a project together, the ideas should be as clear as possible.
You must be able to communicate your desires, and, above all, stay calm in the face of conflict. After all, if you get overly emotional, this includes your judgment and communication style. The key is learning how to say what you need in a way that the other partner can hear it.
Maintain Intimacy
Perhaps one of the most obvious yet often most neglected aspects of keeping life alive is intimacy. It’s a necessary part of keeping the closeness between you, and establishing that you’re more than just roommates—you’re lovers!
Remember, intimacy isn’t necessarily just sex, either. Intimacy also comes in the form of holding hands, or simply sleeping in the same bed. It’s the power of touch and closeness which is critical for maintaining a connection throughout the years. Yet, many couples get too comfortable over the years and forget how important it is to maintain physical touch every single day.
Maintain Individuality
As important as it is to work as a team, it’s also important to remember to maintain your separateness. Individuality is an important part of staying happy together, since regardless of how much you love each other, anyone will go crazy doing absolutely everything with one person. Make sure you have your own friends and your own activities. Allow your partner to have and do the same, and you’ll find that it’s not much more enjoyable when you spend time together. As they say, sometimes distance makes the heart grow fonder. A little bit of time apart will help you miss your partner and crave spending quality time together.
